MAINTENANCE EDUCATION

Care of Your RV

90% of RV failures are due to the lack of maintenance.

As an RV owner, regularly inspecting your rig and performing routine maintenance tasks are key to making your home on wheels last for many years to come. Unexpected repairs can be costly. Proper maintenance also retains the value of your investment. If you are ever wanting to sell your RV, you will want to show the documented RV maintenance and repair log, to get the most return on investment.

Here are some recommendations on basic maintenance for your reference. These are not all inclusive, therefore please refer to the manuals and OEM documents specific to your RV.

Safety Note: when performing any tasks on or around your RV, always ensure you follow proper safety precautions and use appropriate safety gear. Do not perform any maintenance tasks you are not comfortable with , contact us for a Peace of Mind and further education or another qualified service provider in your area.

Read The Manuals

Knowing about your specific RV and how all the components work, is most important to travelling safety. In any breakdown situation, manuals become your best friend. If you don't have the manual for a specific component, you will want to download one from the manufacturer and print it. Then, make a folder that contains all your manuals in one place.

Some manuals to be sure to have on hand:

- the Manufacture’s Owner’s Manual

- Motor home: vehicle & engine

- Kitchen: appliances

- Water: heater

- Power: gas, generator, solar

- Heat furnace / air conditioner / fans

- Safety: fire extinguisher and detectors

- Entertainment: TV, satellite  antenna

- Miscellaneous: for those extra manuals

Before The Trip

You will want to do the safety checks on your rig right before leaving home:

- Check the exterior for anything open and lock it up.

- Check tires for cracks and check pressure.

- Check towing equipment, making sure that the brake lights are working.

- Secure or tie down anything that moves.

- Do one last walk around the RV.

- On the road: Weigh your RV with all contents onboard. Adjust packing accordingly.

Reminder: there is "NO HURRY" in RV life, take your time, especially when packing up to leave.

03 / 05

Annual (Spring) Maintenance

The most important and comprehensive maintenance process of all.

Before you go out on the road, after months of your rig in storage, you will want to make sure all is inspected, tested and repaired as needed.

See our summary of the points to check here.

Some RV companies also offer a 45 point maintenance check and repair.

Monthly Maintenance

Your RV requires periodic and ongoing maintenance as you travel down the road:

- Tank cleaning: sometimes an odor or clog will happen in the RV plumbing. Emptying your tanks and refreshing them regularly can help prevent this.

- Exterior washing and waxing: it is recommended to wash and wax your RV twice a year to prevent UV sun damage and maintain the decals and paint.

- Interior Declutter: be cognitive of the storage on the RV and not to increase the allowable weight. Reassess and purge regularly.

05 / 05

Winter Maintenance

At the end of another adventure filled summer, you may be putting your RV into storage. Here are some points to remember:

- Winterize the plumbing system (get all liquid out of the lines)

- Batteries, remove or disconnect to prevent discharging

- Declutter: a perfect time to reassess what you did use and what you can take off the list for next year. Remove all items that pests are looking for...

- Pest check: remove anything that would food or nest material. also look for any visible light holes, cracks in the RV and plug or seal.

- RV cover: some people cover their RVs to protect them from the winter elements. Be sure the cover fits your specific RV and is tightly adhered as any play in the cover may scratch or wear on the exterior.

Cobus D

"I had the opportunity to purchase a 2022 Primetime Sanibel but as a private sale, so used Anton to do an inspection for me. The report was so much more than I expected, covering aspects I didn’t even think about. And I believe everything that could be a factor in my sale negotiation, was covered in the report. I had the opportunity to make a truly informed decision after going through the final inspection report. From the initial contact, to the inspection itself, Anton kept me informed about what he was doing and what he found. He explained everything in clear and precise terms so even the most uninformed could understand. I can truly recommend Anton for your next RV inspection."
